The school was officially established in 1849. In 1911, the school separated into a Primary school and two High Schools being 'Fort Street Boys High School' and 'Fort Street Girls High School'. It wasn't until after 1975 when the High Schools moved to the current site in Petersham and amalgamated to form what is now known as 'Fort Street High School'.
