The National Redress Scheme is for people who were sexually abused when they were a child at an institution.

An institution could be a school, church, mission, orphanage, foster care, hospital, detention centre or a sporting club.

The sexual abuse could have happened at the institution.

Or, it could have happened during an activity that was organised by the institution, such as a swimming lesson.

If someone you support applies to the National Redress Scheme and gets a redress offer, it can include a payment, free and confidential counselling, and an apology from an institution.

As a carer, support worker or legal nominee, you can play an important role in helping people with disability who decide to apply to the National Redress Scheme.

A person with disability may want help reading, understanding or filling out the application form.

Or they may ask you to apply for them if you’re allowed to make decisions on their behalf.

Specialist Redress Support Services can provide practical and emotional support to people with disability and their carers before, during or after they apply to the National Redress Scheme.

To find out more about these options, or to connect with Redress Support Services, call 1800 737 377 from Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
