Steven is a survivor of institutional child sexual abuse, who lives with disability.
He applied for redress through the National Redress Scheme with the help of a specialist Redress Support Service.
My name's Steven Beyzade, I was born in Sydney, Australia.
My daughter told me that the Redress Scheme's out there and you can claim for it.
That's how I heard of it.
Otherwise, I wouldn't have known.
I wanted to get involved with it and ask questions about what the scheme is going to do, how did it come about?
And as soon as I knew a little bit of it, I turned around and I said, I'll put the application in.
When I started the Redress Scheme, Linda was the first one that was on my case.
Linda was the first one that was on my case.
She helped me out a lot.
She explained everything to me, what needs to be done, what doesn't need to be done, telling me that "Everything's all right, we don't rush people, we take our time, we give you time to work out what you want to say and what you have been through."
I, maybe, had about three or four sessions and that was over the phone for an hour to an hour and maybe 15 minutes 'cause there's so much to tell, so much to say.
You can't tell it all in one go, it's not going to work. So breaking it up was a good idea for Linda to do that with me, and she's very, very helpful in every way.
Oh, it was difficult for me to say things and to tell 'em what's happened and what isn't happened.
I don't tell my kids, I don't say nothing, I keep it to myself.
The first time I've told anyone about what's happened would've been Linda.
But at the end of the day, you're not going to get any payment or any letters of any sorry or anything without actually telling your story.
And you don't go and tell your story to anyone, you just tell it to the Redress Scheme 'cause they're the ones that want to help you with it.
It was worth it at the end.
I received a good amount of money and when I received the letters of apology, I read them and my caseworker read 'em to me as well.
And it is a good thing that they know what's happened shouldn't have happened.
All people should be protected, but obviously, things go wrong and we've got to make the best of it.
If you were in any of these places, the government's definitely got your name down there so they know you're there.
So I'd go for it and see if they can help you.
It's not going to heal you, but it's going to make a bit of a difference if you can receive apologies or receive a payment of some sort from the government, it'd be worth doing for yourself.
Just be honest with the people that you're talking to and you can't go wrong.
